Plans were officially announced for a 1,422 ft (433.4 m) tall 200-unit hotel, 439-apartment and 125-condominium building on April 16, 2018. Originally envisioned at 1,388 ft (423.1 m) and standing nearly three times as tall as the 36-story Tribune Tower, the Tribune East Tower faced opposition for obstructing views of the Tower, as well as "dwarfing" it from a historical perspective. As an employee of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Adrian Smith had designed Trump Tower and the Burj Khalifa, which became the tallest building in the world in 2010. The new skyscraper was designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture of Chicago. Plans called for 220 hotel rooms and 158 condominium units the tower would be slightly shorter than the Trump International Hotel and Tower. The largest penthouse with a private outdoor pool will cost around 17 million US dollars. The 393 residences are spread over floors 13 to 93 and, according to US media, prices start at around one million US dollars. A spa, a fitness center and an indoor pool with an outdoor terrace will complete the facilities. The plans include a restaurant open all day with a view of the Chicago River and a sky bar with terrace. The culinary concept of the St Regis Chicago will be the responsibility of the Michelin-starred Alinea Group. The hotel itself consists of 158 rooms and 33 suites, but these are located on the lower eleven floors of the three interconnected towers. Once completed, the 101-story skyscraper, construction of which began in 2016, will be the third tallest building in the metropolis and will offer a sweeping view of the Chicago River to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, Millennium and Grant Parks to the south and the Loop Skyline to the west. However, the first of the total of 393 residences will be ready for occupancy as early as December of this year. The new St Regis Chicago is scheduled to open in July 2021.
